Freya's mother was cursed by a tribe of gypsies. When she had Freya, she didn't yet realize that the curse had taken full hold on -not her- but her daughter.

Freya's emotions make her shapeshift. Over time, she learned to control this ability, and actually improve upon it. But, being empathic makes this difficult.

She can shapeshift at will, but she has been known to lose control of the 'animal brain' and become the animal itself. When she shifts because of her emotions, she has full control of the animal, but they are usually defenseless.

She, like any other shapeshifter, has her favorites.

Added note: It was rumored that she did not appear for her mothers funeral, that she disappeared for a year. There were also reports of a Horned Owl at the funeral, and present at the house her mother was murdered in.
